INTRODUCTION to COACHING
Players are the essential component to any Rugby Club and their development and retention is vital to its sustainability.
At Trojans, we are committed to providing good quality coaching throughout the club and understand that a major factor in the development of our players, whatever their age, is driven by the quality of our own coaches and their ability to deliver top class training sessions.
it is also recognised that a good coach and good coaching is more likely to keep players in the game for longer.
The good coach:
• sees what is right and praises it
• sees what is wrong
• recognises why it wrong and...
• knows how to correct it.
The coach has served players well in Rugby if they:
• have experienced success
• have confidence and high self-esteem
• can co-operate within a team
• have had lots of fun.
Good coaching gets the best out of ALL the players and a good coach will do this by continually striving to improve, develop and challenge him/herself. This can partly be achieved by
• attending seminars, coaching clinics and CPD (Continual Personal Development)
• observing other coaches
• reading books, articles and web pages
• gaining feedback on their sessions from other coaches and players
• reflecting on their own performance
Often coaches are not aware of the resources and opportunities available to you to aid your development or under the misapprehension that in order to attend a course they will have to travel large distances and pay large sums of money.
Whilst many of the formal rugby qualification courses (Level 1 to 3) may require some travel, many foundation and CPD courses are arranged locally.
My role as the Club Coaching Co-ordinator (CCC) is to act as a central point for all communication regarding coaching development at Trojans Rugby and to promote the most appropriate training courses for all the coaching team at the club, from the U7’s all the way through to the Senior Coach of the Mens 1st XV.
Within the club we encourage our coaches to become the best they can and use the RFU coaching framework to help achieve this.
It is important to understand that coaching Rugby is not a race and there is no hurry for people to rush towards the next qualification. it is important that coaches improve and develop, with the next qualification being a consequence of that, not the drive for it!
Please remember that qualifications may not make you a better coach - attitude, application and willingness to continue to learn and improve WILL!......
Yours in Rugby!
