THE 2005/2006 SEASON
After the success of
the previous season, the 2005/2006 season was one of disappointment for
the 1st XV, being relegated from London 4 South East. But it
was a close run thing, finally being placed in the last relegation
position by virtue of points difference from the next higher team.
Looking back on the season a number of close defeats (Cobham 13 – 18,
KCS 23 – 27, London Cornish 8 – 15 and Old Paulines 14 – 16) showed how
close it was and meeting Dorking a week after they had reached the
Junior Vase final at Twickenham really put paid to a reasonable points
difference. There was better news, however, in the Junior Vase where a
run to the fifth round was the best ever achieved. Early wins against
local opposition in Southampton and New Milton were followed by two good
wins against Charlton Park and Hastings & Bexhill before the long trip
to Betteshanger (Deal) was a Motorway trip too far.
The 2nd XV again
had a good season moving up one place to second in the Hampshire Senior merit
Table with the 3rd XV maintaining their third place in Hampshire
Merit Table 1. Again, these were excellent results seeing that both teams were
playing a lot of teams whose 1sts were playing in higher leagues.
The Women had a very
successful, if tiring, season. A second place in the National One South West
league, compared to fourth last season, was an excellent result particularly
considering the travelling involved. The semi-finals of the National Shield was
reached but the trip to Waterloo (Liverpool) sapped the strength. In early
season they became Hampshire 10s Champions and good progress was made in both
the Lytchett Minster 7s and the National 7s.
The Colts started the season
well with 5 wins out of seven games but struggled in the second half of the
season to end up 5th in the league.
The under 16s entered the
inaugural Hampshire league and did very well to end up in third place although
deserved a second place on the actual results.
