THE 2009/2010 SEASON
For the 1st XV, the new season in London 2 SW (renamed from London 3SW) was going to be tough but, overall, the team acquitted themselves very well ending up just in the top half. This is, in fact, the highest position attained since the leagues began but, it has to be said, it could have been higher with 2 drawn games and 5 games lost by a single score with 3 of those lost in the last 5 minutes. Nevertheless, it bodes well for next season. A good start was made in the Intermediate Cup with wins over Bromley and Bognor before becoming unstuck by a very strong Tonnbridge Juddians side.
The 2nd XV did well to come 4th in the Senior Merit table but struggled in getting regular friendly fixtures fulfilled which spoilt their continuity. The 3rd XV, on the other hand, didn't do so well in the Merit Table (coming 8 out of 9) but managed many friendlies and ending up with a fair split of results. Numbers overall were good and a 4th XV was fielded on two occasions.
The Ladies team managed to retain their position in the RFUW Championship South 1 League with some very tough fixtures. Recruitment was very good, however, and second team was entered into the South Friendly League which was convincingly won with a league points tally of 509 with 27 against. One of the strengths here is that Ladies who are inexperienced or new to the game train with players who play at a high level and obviously learn a lot. They will now play in the "RFUW National Challenge South East West 3" League - no, that isn't a misprint!
The Colts had an indifferent season with poor results in the first half of the season. A Change in the coaching set up saw Neil Andrews come in as head coach and enthuse the players with a different approach to training. Although results didn't improve they managed to pull off the great escape from relegation by beating Portsmouth in the last match of the season. Hard to follow that, but shortly afterwards, the lads went down to the Lytchett 7s and beat the home club in the final of the Plate.
The Junior teams mainly struggled with both the Under 15 and Under 14 teams showing their strength by holding up their respective leagues but the Under 16s did better by coming 6th out of 10. The Under 16s also got to the Plate Final of the Gosport Tournament and the Challenge Cup Final at the South Coast Festival of Rugby in Torquay. The Under 13s did well winning 10 out of their 15 games and having a good cup run just losing to Basingstoke in the semi-final.
The Minis had their usual hectic season with them following successes achieved -
A number of representative honours were achieved –
Marie Hollingsworth, Lisa Suffling, Samantha Cornborough, Donna Rose and Kelly Rush played for the Region.
There were no Hampshire representatives as there were no games played.
George Watt, Dan Jack, Elliott White and Troy Cusack achieved representative honours at Hampshire Under 16s and at Under 14s Dan Wotton and Chris Wright.
Honours ties (100 1st XV games) were awarded to Rudi Kochanowski.
Also well done to Cameron Haisman, Luke Frost, Max self and Charlie Stonehill for getting in to the London Irish Bronze Group.
On the administration side, in March 2010 Trojans Rugby achieved the highly prestigious Whole Club Seal of Approval - the first club in Hampshire to do this and only the 23rd in the Country. The accreditation recognises the effort and achievement of volunteers in reaching the standard required in the development of rugby across the whole club, and to plan for the long term sustainability of the club and rugby union.
The RFU introduced the Seal of Approval programme in association with Sport England and the Clubmark scheme in 2002. The Whole Club Seal of Approval accreditation was introduced in 2009 as a method of ensuring high quality provision of rugby in clubs. It builds on the established procedures of Mini and Youth Seal of Approval. Clubs are assessed by the RFU and must demonstrate evidence of good practice in areas such as club management, player development & recruitment, child protection, sports equity, coaching, refereeing and volunteering.
In another RFU initiative, Trojans were the first club in the County to create a Club Referees Society to encourage the recruitment and training of referees.
