This season, the British Universities Sports
Association will hold its annual Rugby Sevens competition in honour of
Derek Prout.
Trojans Rugby Club and Southampton Solent
University will host the event, at the grounds off Stoneham Lane. It is
expected that 32 of the top university rugby teams in the UK (16 men’s
and 16 women’s teams) will take part.
Derek dedicated much of his working life in support
of the student community. He was a member of the Student RFU, holding
many positions, including that of selector, for over a decade.
During his long career in rugby, he
represented Launceston, Redruth, Cornwall, SW Counties, Loughborough
Colleges, Northampton, Harlequins, Hampshire, Barbarians, England, and
Trojans, where he made over 100 first XV appearances as player, captain
and coach. He was also a club Vice President and coached the county
team for four years during the 1980’s.
Derek served at the Southampton
Institute (now Southampton Solent University) for over 30 years,
including appointments as Head of Sports and Leisure, and Head of
Student Services.
All Trojans members are
encouraged to attend and support this event in honour of one of our
local sporting heroes. Several of Derek’s former England colleagues are
expected to attend. |
