Gerald Penn-Barrow

Trojans members were saddened to hear that Gerald had passed away on Sunday evening, 1st October.

Gerald's main playing days were immediately post war when he captained Trojans in 1948/49 and captained Hampshire in 1949. In November 1947 he played for a combined Hampshire/Sussex side against the Australians at the Dell where his loose play was described as "excellent".

He was a great ambassador for the Club throughout his long service in rugby administration. He started as Hampshire RFU Team Secretary in 1953 and held the post for 21 years when he became Chairman of HRFU for seven years. This was followed by being President of HRFU for four years. He was also Chairman then President of the London Division RFU. In 1969 Gerald became the Hampshire representative on the RFU Committee (the fourth Trojan to hold that position since its inception in 1923) and held the position for sixteen years, also being appointed to the Executive Committee. One little quirk of history shows that the Hampshire man, as Chairman of the RFU Ground Committee, was responsible for the building of the South Stand at Twickenham and his Hampshire successor (LeRoy Angel) was responsible for blowing it up last year!

When Gerald finally stood down from Hampshire and the RFU in 1985, and being a good Trojan, he immediately rejoined the Trojan Rugby Committee. At the first meeting he demanded to know the Dinner Dates for the next five years so that he could arrange the speakers! And so he did (and for longer) using his many connections and senior members of the RFU knew that the approach would come.

He will be sorely missed.

Gerald's funeral arrangements are:

12 noon Friday 20th October at St Faiths Church, Lee on the Solent, Hampshire.  Family flowers only.  Please wear something fairly cheerful as he didn't want a  black funeral!  So ladies pretty blouses and men bright happy rugby ties etc.

Donations if desired to the funeral arrangers Solent Funeral Services, 81 High Street, Lee on the Solent Hampshire PO13 9BU
