 Trojans Fight for a Life

When nine year old Oliver Uglow, a lively and active member of the Trojans Rugby Club was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia in 2008 his team mates and members of the club rallied round and decided to do something positive. Trojan Mum’s Laura Self and Kerry Sanders set about organising a special screening of Mama Mia in December at the Harbour Lights cinema in Ocean Village to a crowd of 220 all in Abba Spandex fancy dress and managed to raise an amazing £3000 from the event.

Plucky young Ollie, now doing well after his treatment proudly presented Dr’s David & Bee Flavell, Scientific Directors of the local children’s leukaemia research charity Leukaemia Busters with a cheque for £1500 in front of cheering friends and team mates. Ollie said after the presentation “ It was tough going through treatment but it was worth it because now I feel much better again and I’ve helped to raise this money for leukaemia research from my hospital bed!”.

Leukaemia Busters who have laboratories at Southampton General Hospital, pioneer new forms of treatment using antibodies to selectively target drugs and powerful toxins to the leukaemia cells thus avoiding the side effects of today’s chemotherapy. Leukaemia Busters were the first organisation in Britain to test an antibody treatment they had developed in their Southampton laboratories in a national clinical trial in children with relapsed leukaemia.
