Monday 5th May 2008 Newbury 10s

After Saturday at Lychett Minster 7s, it was nice to have a full squad available for the Newbury 10s.

Game 1: Trojans 5 v 10 Devenport

The usual start to all our competitions a loss. Trojans started with good work, but a lack of support to the player with ball was our undoing. Hard work carried out by all players kept being undone by the referee blowing for holding on. A pair of tries by Devenport and a reply by Tom Townsend was the result. The players all did well but lost a game we could have won.

Tries: Tom Townsend

Game 2: Trojans 12 v 5 Devizes

After the earlier result, the team woke up and realised a win was required to stay in the cup. Watching Devizes  in their game, their play makers were identified and appropriate action was required. The team more determined and some lovely play by the backs and hard work by the forwards kept out the Devizes runners. With Zack leading the way and scoring two tries (he’s obviously been having long distance running lessons) a win was on the cards. Some strong defence was required by everyone to maintain the win as Devizes scored.

Tries: Zack Kinnaird x 2   Conversion: Paul Broadway

Game 3: Trojans 19 v 0 Newbury Roebucks

Trojans were now under steam. With various scenarios for the results we would be runners up and in the cup. Everyone was now understanding how to play 10s, with one man tackles and space being used to release our runners, while forcing the opposition to use more men in their tackles toward us. The backs were in full evidence after being released by the hard work of the forwards allowing tries by Tom Townsend and Elliott Culley. Not to be outdone, the forwards had their say, with a run away try by Max Rogers Haines. An excellent pair of conversions by Kourosh Afshar and a very good win was complete.

Tries: Max Rogers – Haines, Tom Townsend, Elliott Culley. Conversions: Kourosh Afshar x 2

 Game 4: Trojans 5 v 19 Winchester

So on to the quarter finals. After being watched by our next door neighbours all day, checking numbers and being interested in our training methods, we faced Winchester.

With a good amount of earthy encouragement to each and every player the team went on with the right attitude for a good win. A strong leadership from Zack in the tackles and soon all the team were on fire. The forwards were strong and went in well with the knowledge they were well supported by the backs. Just at half time Winchester scored. Time to encourage everyone, Winchester heads were not high. Second half and more of the team full effort, but missed tackles and Winchester were in. Trojans could still win, with the determination and effort being shown, and sure enough up steps Tom Townsend for the try. Only some missed tackling cost us. With tackles going in too high, broken tackles and non ball retention in our tackles, Winchester scored the killer try to win the game.

 Tries : Tom Townsend

Once we believe we can beat local teams, I am sure we will go on to beat them many times. Some players though, need to look to the boring side of training and increase their skills, in ball carrying retention, low tackling, support play and communication, none of which comes without effort or practice.

Overall, an enjoyable event that could have been won.

27/04/08 Oakmedians (H) Friendly  W 65 - 0

A sharp storm in the early hours of the morning was a foreboding omen for the coiled spring that is Trojan's under sixteen's. The cool morning, firm under foot was to allow for a perfect game of running rugby. A positive and focussed warm up cemented the attitude of the players. Regular hooker Luke Barnes unavailable, Tom Semple took over that responsibility. With Oakmedian not having a fit front row, the game was to take place non contested. From the kick off, Trojans tried to forced the pace, though poor passing allowed the ball to hit the ground, and a Oakmedian's player pounced and kick through to gain possession. Great composure and pace between Grant Burr and Elliott Culley prevented an early Oakmedian try. Good defence from Trojans eventually gained possession followed by a good run down field. Oakmedian's defence fumbled, resulting try saw quick hands through the backs and Chris Street going over in the corner. A day for rotating kickers and confusing match reporters. Conversion missed.

Almost from the off Trojans regained possession from a well contested ruck. A resurgent Calum Hall picked up and broke, dummied a kick forward, so wrong footing the defence, then charge forward. Eventually the ball came to Max Rogers-Haines who powered forward until stopped, off loading to Elliott who took the ball forward and with a brilliant long pass out to the wing, Tom Townsend gathering at pace scored a perfect try in the corner. Conversion missed. Trojans third try was scored from a line out. Tom Semple showing some good line out throwing collected by Tony Hewitt, off the top, to Matthew Stenning who's jiggling run crossed the line and scored. Kourosh Afshar stepped up and converted. Trojans regained possession and pressured the Oakmedians line on two occasions during a sustained period of pressure. Joe Carne and then Andy King were both judged held up. Oakmedians cleared their lines. A quick line out to Tom Semple saw the ball spread along the line gathered by Josh Bowker, running straight, cross over for a try, conversion missed. The next try came again from a line out caught by Calum, the ball went through the backs for Chris to be held up in the corner. From the resulting scrum Matthew Stenning danced over for his second try. Missed conversion. End of a positive first half for Trojans.

Half time: Trojans 27 - 0 Oakmedians.

From the restart Patrick Phillips took possession, great running on the end of a good kick. Set up the ball which was picked up by good support play by Joe Carne and running forward gaining ground. The ball broke to Chris who’s forward running and perfect timing released Josh (running straight) to score under the post. Converted try. Oakmedian’s re asserted pressure, but their attack petered out with Trojans gaining possession, a long lofted kick down field was gathered by the Oakmedian winger who was tackled by Tom on the wing, ball knocked forward. Scrum, a quick break from base, good support saw Joe emerge from the ruck and drove forward just short of the line. Matt recovered the ball and side stepped over for a try. With the game in the bag Trojans stopped thinking rugby. A series of ill discipline saw Trojans being marched back half the length of the pitch. When Trojans regained their composure Oakmedians kicked down field gathered by the hard working Elliott, giving a bit of a jig before straightening his running, ran the ball back towards the Trojans forwards. Linking well with Neil McBride who was stopped close to the Oakmedians try line. Elliott rejoined the support line to take a pass and score in the corner. Koroush converted.

Oakmedians restarted. They won a penalty, kicked for a line out. From the line out Andy emerged with the ball drove forward. Playing the phases the ball then broke to Josh running straight a the Oakmedian's defence broke a tackle and scored  under the post. Paul duly stepped up and converted.

Trojans back's interchanging of ball from the restart pressured Oakmedians again. Well backed up  going through the phases which eventually allowed Josh  to power over. Conversion missed. The final try was a good combination of good driving and back interchange. The total try. Backs finally having the confidence to retain possession to pick and drive. This after a period of Oakmedians determined pressure. Tom over for another great try in the corner. Kourosh converted. Final whistle  Trojans 65 - 0 Oakmedians

Although credit needs to go to the quality of the Trojans play, Oakmedians battled on, and persevered and never dropped their commitment, and the final score does not reflect the quality of their play. Trojans interchange between backs and forwards, direct running, good tackling, coupled with a straight line defence with wingers battling hard became an irresistible force. Well done to every player in the team for all your hard work and commitment with a great result to the final full match of the season. Good luck all for the up coming 7s & 10s tournaments, and your next season as Colts.

Tries: Joshua Bowker x 4, Matthew Stenning x 3, Tom Townsend x 2, Chris Street, Elliott Culley.

Conversions: Kourosh Afshar x 3, Paul Broadway x 2.

20/04/08 Basingstoke (H) League  W 42 - 7

For the final league game of the season we were blessed with a fine clear morning. A recipe for a good open game. It was important for all that had supported the under sixteen squad and players alike to see a good solid performance. It would be just reward for an excellent season even if results had not always gone our way. A positive training season on Friday was followed by a focussed warm up before the game. The team already picked those that were to begin, as replacements made themselves visible in their desires to replace those fortunate to start. It is that sort of attitude that will make success next season and allow us to build upon a magical season at Colts.

So to the game. Referee finally sorted out and agreed upon at the last moment, the kick off occurred with open and frantic mid field exchanges, which saw Basingstoke assert dominance around the breakdown with better technique, presence and aggression to win the ball. A quick break from Basingstoke was eventually relieved by Jack Rowland playing as full back, taking a high ball over his shoulder then finding a good touch clearance. But the pattern of the game was the amount of penalties conceded for encroaching and handling in the ruck's.

Eventually Basingstoke encroached, and Trojans penalty around the half way line. Zack Kinnaird gained the ball and made one of his powerful direct runs. Plenty of support saw the ball come to  Joe Carne who snipped forward a yards reset the ball. By now Basingstoke was stretched as Zack picked up the ball, drove committed the defender and passed out to Josh Bowker who took the ball at pace to score the perfect try under the post. A brilliant advert for forward running and quick hands and going with support. Paul Broadway’s boot converted.

Basingstoke looked positive to try to regain the initiative and which they did, by taking on Daniel Thompson on the wing. Possibly the bravest tackler in the side at the moment, he seemed to be dumping all and sundry on their posteriors. Eventually one tackle to many and Dan needed to leave the field with an elbow injury, on came Elliott Culley.

From the restart, a penalty, touch not being found resulted in a short period of pressure from Basingstoke. Luckily most of the running was lateral making defending easier. Unfortunately it became catching, as again the chorus of “run straight” rang out from the touchline as the ball was passed out, and the ball carrier, obviously wanting to impress the stand ran towards it instead of heading for the post. Slow passing and lateral running preventing Trojans from exploiting the disjointed Basingstoke line. From the ruck Basingstoke kicked down field.

From a shortened line out Luke Barnes weighted a good ball over the top to Zack who broke again running straight. Slow passing and over willingness to take the contact saw the attack peter out. But Trojans continued to pressure. Again, Joe Cairns picked up and drove from a ruck, support quickly won the ball and Max Rogers-Haines drove over between the post. Paul must have thought it was Christmas, two conversions between the post in one game, where's the sport in that. 14 - 0 up. So ended the first half. Team talk about discipline, committing players to the ruck and body positioning in the drive, direct running. Neil McBride on for Andy King to gain more mobility around the park.

Beginning of the second half saw Basingstoke kick off. Max recovered the kick, deciding not to go himself, passed the ball on, Zack eventually received the ball and ran the length of the pitch to score under the post. Paul converted. Basingstoke restarted hard and threatened the Trojans line. A kick through touched down in defence, drop out 22, which was then charged down. Still Basingstoke had dominance around the breakdown although their lateral running eased the pressure on Trojans, inevitably they broke towards the corner, Elliott’s try saving tackle forcing their winger on to the flag and touch at the same time.

On came Callum Hall and Lewis Vigor who both showed presence around the break down which had been lacking throughout the game. Scrum in the Basingstoke half, Zack picked up from the base, and powered his way through the centre of the post, for Paul to convert. The restart saw Tom Townsend break down the wing for his well deserved try, another conversion by Paul. Confusion then reigned, as the referee forgot what level we play at. So with ten minutes more to play, Basingstoke restarted and pressured our line. A break on the wing by John Baird saw the ball spill forward and from the resulting Basingstoke break, turnover ball. Then excellent back interchanging saw Grant Burr finish off with a great try. Paul duly converted. Basingstoke’s aggressive running and good rucking finally paid off as they won the ball from a ruck, pick up from the base to drive over.

A good game of rugby played in good spirits by both sides. In particular Callum, Lewis and Neil for coming off the bench and keeping the momentum going. Grant's determined running in the centre. In particular Zack and Max who always turn up in the right places at the right time. Well done lads.

Tries: Zack Kinnaird x 2, Joshua Bowker, Max Rogers-Haines, Tom Townsend, Grant Burr.

Conversions: Paul Broadway x 6

30/03/08 Winchester (A) League L 3 - 26

Trojans started off so well making Winchester give away a few penalties, one converted by Jack Rowland.

We were 3 -0 up until a breakdown in communication resulted in Winchester getting a lucky try and converting, soon we will learn when the referee says “ next time the balls dead” and we will do the right thing. Zack Kinnaird was everywhere, tackling his heart out. Joe Nolan demolished his opposite number in the scrum and loose play, he was sorely missed when he went off (recent back injury) at half time.

Tom Townsend had his best ever game, making good ground regularly. Max Rogers-Haines had his usual good game. Kourosh Afshar tackled well.

In the second half Winchester showed the rugby know how and ran in a few lucky tries, but well done both teams, for a well fought totally committed game.

Man of the Match – Tom Townsend through sheer strength and commitment.

Saturday 22nd March – Hayle 7 v 48 Trojans

We were told by the locals, that Hayle were not a bad team, but were missing a few of their players due to the Easter school holidays in Cornwall. Trojans started well considering the amount of sleep the lads had, or the lack of!  We just heaped on the pressure – the communication was brilliant.

Tom Semple was unlucky not to score a try, but offloaded in a tackle, letting Kourosh Afshar take the glory. Luke Barnes had a stormer, winning lots of ball against the head. Grant Burr marshalled the backs superbly. George Chick tackled his heart out, scoring a well deserved try.

Tony Hewitt’s game reading kept the Hayle score down, organising our defence and making some text book tackles. The opposition’s ball wasn’t safe with Max Rogers-Haines on the park, who stole numerous balls in the tight.

Trojans finished strongly and winning well, a brilliant team effort.

Man of the Match – Daniel Thompson through his fearless tackling – well done Dan.

Tries:  John Baird x 2, Kourosh Afshar, Matthew Stenning, Elliott Culley, Zack Kinnaird, Joshua Bowker,

George Chick.

Conversion: Paul Broadway x 4.

Sunday 23rd March – Camborne 12 v 41 Trojans

Camborne, whose first team are the Cornish Pirates, one of the best teams in Cornwall, deemed to be a much stronger opposition. Trojans started well, pressure was the plan for today’s performance.

Neil McBride put his body on the line, coming off with a blood injury, he couldn’t wait to go back on.

Andy King came on as a prop and seemed to love this type of game, mud, sunshine, rain, hailstones and the cold, but the whole team kept warm by working hard.

Patrick Phillips tackled his heart out. Jack Rowland showed brilliant hands some of the time at No 10. Grant Burr kicked well, putting the opposition under huge pressure.

Paul Broadway showed much improved hardness physically, after getting punched a few times.

Trojans did well to keep their discipline, as the opposition deteriorated, not being helped by the referee.

The try of the day was Joe Carne’s who ran from halfway, from a brilliant overhead pass from Grant Burr. Joe was disappointed not to have had a support player to the pass the ball to, so he had to run in himself.

Callum Hall, caught some brilliant ball in the line-out’s, and tackled well.

A good all round performance by everyone – considering the conditions.

Man of the Match - Grant Burr through a brilliant rugby attitude.

Tries: Chris Street x 2, Max Rogers Haines, Grant Burr, Zack Kinnaird, Joe Carne, Tom Townsend.

Conversions: Paul Broadway x 3

Monday 24th March – Tavistock 19 v 17 Trojans

What a brilliant reception from Tavistock, before and after the game! Our informant George Rope, who played the first half as hooker, let us know that Tavistock only win by 40-60- 80 – nil margins! so this was going to be a tight game.

The ground was very slippery underfoot. Tom Semple did well on the wing. This was going to be a real forwards game. Lewis Vigor was ruthless in the rucks and mauls, tackling his heart out.

At half time we were 19-0 down, a few changes were made and we slowly turned the game around. Jack Rowland put in some good kicks, which were chased well by Kourosh Afshar, Zack Kinnaird, and Tom Townsend. Our first try came from Joe Carne. Callum Hall showed some good footwork to run in our second. With some good ground made by Elliott Culley, then a good pass put Zack Kinnaird in for his well deserved try with Paul Broadway converting one. Trojans heaped on the pressure, keeping continuity and going forward, and didn’t let possession go. It was unfortunate the final whistle went when it did, but everyone knew what a brilliant all round performance both sides gave the spectators.

Thanks Tavistock and Trojans U16s – What an end to a brilliant tour, and with probably only a few hours sleep!

Man of the Match – Patrick Phillips and Neil McBride jointly for their tireless tackling.

Tries: Joe Carne, Callum Hall, Zack Kinnaird.

Conversion: Paul Broadway

06/04/08  Swanage & Wareham Festival of Youth Rugby

A new tournament for Trojans at Swanage and Wareham and a nice day too. Some snow at home earlier in the morning, but on arrival in Dorset, clear pitches and a dry day made for a good days rugby.

Trowbridge did not make it so a 10s tournament was set up at the last minute with Lytchett having an A and B team.

First game was up and ready for kick of at 11.15, so only a very quick warm up for the Trojans.

The team was named as 5 forwards in the scrum, Patrick Philips, Neil(Mr Utility)McBride, Andy King, Joshua Bowker, Calum Hall and backs  Paul Broadway, Matthew Stenning, Grant Burr, Kourosh Afshar and Tom Townsend.

Subs were Zack Kinnaird, Max Rogers-Haines, Elliott Culley and Jack Rowland

Game 1: Trojans 10 v 12 Lytchett Minster A (L)

Kick off, and it was soon realised how much wind was about, and how everyone had to be up and running with brain as well as hands and feet. Some good play against some more street-wise players soon set the tone for the day. Lytchett A scored first with a conversion after a kick through. Changes to Trojans were made as the game went on to allow use of fresh legs in a very fast game. Phases of good play were rewarded with a try by Kourosh.

Second half and with real team play by the whole squad, subs came on and made real impact on the game. With try saving tackles, and some real in the face pressure, the team made a try and took the lead. On the last play, and a little lack of concentration, instead of using the side line to get the ball off the pitch and end the match, we played forward and lost the ball. A kick over and Lytchett won the race to score the killer try.

Tries: Kourosh Afshar, Zack Kinnaird.

 Game 2: Trojans 53 v 0 Swanage and Wareham (W)

Second game and the same line up to start. The whole team realised that they could blow their chances if they did not communicate and play for each other. Swanage had played in the game before so some knowledge of their play was had and used. Once the forwards got to work, and beat back any threats with tackles and hard won ball the backs could show their running, handling and tackle evasion skills. The first of the tries was the trigger to open up, and the hard work was rewarded by the amount of tries scored, even to the point of a drop goal being scored through the dominance of our play. Again each player played for the team, coming on or off the field to help achieve the win, but also to be available for the next game.

Tries: Matthew Stenning x 3, Kourosh Afshar x 3, Zack Kinnaird, Grant Burr.

Conversions: Paul Broadway x 4, Jack Rowland.

Drop Goal: Jack Rowland.

Game 3: Trojans 73 v 0 Lytchett Minster B (W)

Once again, same team, same aim, same result. Trojans were out to upset the party planned by Lytchett (who thought they would have two teams in the final). The team was on fire by now, with the whole squad wanting to play and win (the competition of who had the most points on the score sheet being keenly contested!). Out and out good play by everyone was the order of this game.

Hard tackles, make ground, fight for every ball and stop any one from Lytchett getting into our half, was made possible by the dogged work of every player. Unlike the rest of the day, this game was played in a snow blizzard!

Tries: Kourosh Afshar x 5, Elliott Culley x 2, Callum Hall, Zack Kinnaird, Jack Rowland, Neil Mc Bride.

Conversions: Paul Broadway x 4, Jack Rowland x 5

Cup Final: Trojans 22 v 7 Lytchett Minster A (W)

By now Trojans were the street-wise team, and showed it by refusing to be intimidated, or lower their own standards of play. The team turned straight round from their semi final game to play against the only team to have beaten them. The starting line up was ready, and Trojans took their play to Lytchett from the start. Some dubious play by Lytchett did nothing to upset Trojans, and soon a try was on the board. Lytchett came back and started to play some good rugby and brought the score back to even the game. Trojans had learnt a lesson earlier in the day and were not going to give this game away. Everyone seemed to totally lift their game and soon the hard tackles and the NO lose mentality brought the killer try. Once this try was on the board Lytchett were beaten and their heads dropped. Sensing the taste of victory another try was always a possibility, and so it came.

Trojans totally deserved the win, with their fair play, good rugby and team play. It was a good advert for the game of rugby (all this agreed by Swanage and Wareham)

Tries: Kourosh Afshar x 3, Grant Burr.

Conversion: Jack Rowland

A very well done to everyone - it was a pleasure to be there

02/03/08 Lytchett Minster   (H) Friendly W 26 - 24

The squad were looking forward to this return fixture and were certainly up for this match. The Trojans scrum was so powerful compared to Lytchetts, the tight five worked well as a unit, but we did get some good ball turned over in a lot of fringing from Lytchett.

Joe Nolan powered over for two tries, converting one, Paul Broadway converting the other. Max Rogers- Haines was everywhere, the ball was safe in his hands and he then scored a well worked try, again converted by Paul Broadway. Josh Bowker was a new player, showing excellent discipline, in actions and words, he was unstoppable and scored a well deserved try. Grant Burr did well at No 9. The backs did cause lots of overlaps even on the smaller pitch and should have straightened up more.

As Trojans scrum was so powerful, Lytchett made a tactical substitution, and went to uncontested scrums, which seemed to spoil the game. Zack Kinnaird had an unbelievable match, turning up everywhere; he just could not get enough of tackling the opposition. John Baird looked extremely powerful on the wing, making good ground, but should cut in occasionally. Andy King and Joe Carne worked well together, clearing out the opposition from rucks and securing good ball.

Luke Barnes and Patrick Phillips both had good games at hooker. “Mr Every Position” Neil McBride, had his usual strong game. Kourosh Afshar made good yards and tackled well, but committing more than one player at a time needs to look for the off load. Although the team was swapped around for game time, we kept our continuity well. Well done lads!

Tries: Joe Nolan x2, Max Rogers-Haines, Joshua Bowker, Conversions: Paul Broadway x 2, Joe Nolan.

17/02/08 10s Triangular at Totton

Game 1: Verwood 0 v Trojans 41

It was an exciting day at Tottonians, playing an unknown local side Verwood at rugby 10’s. It started off very tightly contested, with hard tackles going in everywhere. Tom Townsend looked his usual sharp self, running in a well worked try, followed by Christopher Street at outside centre breaking through two tackles. Lewis Vigor looked to be enjoying his game time, and powered over for two tries in a row. Joshua Bowker got his usual try, breaking two tackles, and not using his four man overlaps, as he commits numerous tackles. Impact player Neil McBride powered over for another, and new player Tom Featherstone scored our last. Verwood’s spirit never dropped, and the score line didn’t reflect the game.

Tries: Lewis Vigor x 2, Tom Townsend, Christopher Street, Joshua Bowker, Neil McBride,

Tom Featherstone.

Cons: Paul Broadway x 2, Jack Rowland

Game 2: Tottonians 29 v Trojans 7

As we know, Tottonians are always up for a game of rugby, so we have got to be more self disciplined and not be put off our game. Play in the spirit of the game and everyone adhere to the clubs “ Code of Conduct”, whether it be players or supporters, on or off the pitch, before or afterwards. Coaches need to be watching the game, making tactical substitutions etc and not being involved elsewhere.

Joshua Bowker made soon good hard tackles, quickly getting to his feet and making another, as did Jack Rowland. Joe Nolan had his usual outstanding all round game. Grant Burr looked to have an extra spring in his step, and put in some excellent kicks, chased well by Tom Townsend.

George Chick’s first turn out for a while made some of his usual good low tackles.

Neil McBride, Joe Nolan, Patrick Philips and Max Rogers-Haines worked superbly well as a unit, making good ground and keeping possession. Kourosh Afshar looked strong in the tackles.

Elliott Culley ran in our only try, which Paul Broadway converted. We lost the first half and won the second, letting all players have a good run out- some players may want to look at their own personal fitness and overall game play- especially in the tackle areas. Easily missed tackles are not fair on the rest of the squad, but very well done to those players who gave a full 100% .

Try: Elliott Culley.     Cons: Paul Broadway

10/02/08 Vectis  (A) Friendly  W 48 - 10

With everyone on time for once, we sailed away under blue skies, off to the Isle of Wight.

After a good warm up, and being watched by the opposition, kick off was underway. With various players not being available today, some new positions were being tried out, as requested by the coach, to appreciate the different positions during match time.

Good forwards play with a strong intent, set the theme for the day. Quick ball to the backs was also on the menu for the day. Grant Burr slotted in brilliantly, giving good ball off both hands. The whole squad was able to get in game time, in order to show the coaches what they were made of. Tom Townsend had exceptional runs, and was feared by the opposition. Zack Kinnaird had his usual high standard game, making tackle after tackle. Andy King and Joe Carne powered the forwards, making good territory. Max Rogers-Haines was awesome in the mauls. John Baird looked good with ball in hand, and handing off the opposition well.

This was another brilliant display of how rugby should be played, by a squad of quality players. So let’s carry it on to the League and keep teams looking at us. Well done lads

Tries: Christopher Street x 2, Tom Townsend, Zack Kinnaird, Andy King, Kourosh Afshar, Jack Rowland, Joshua Bowker.

Cons: Jack Rowland x 3, Paul Broadway.

03/02/08 Fareham Heathens  (H) League  L 17 - 20

A crisp overcast day with a blustery wind was the setting for a dramatic and tense match against a Fareham Heathens side confident of an easy day. A purposeful warm up reflected the sense of determination that Trojans had.

From the kick off saw chaos in the Trojans defence as lack of communications resulted in a collision that set up Fareham Heathens to score. From the restart Fareham used the wind to put pressure again on the Trojans line. Dogged defence, some of it on our try line, held the onslaught. Eventually Trojans encroached and conceded a penalty which Fareham converted. With the difficulty of clearing against the wind, the only option open to Trojans was to break out with ball in hand. At times some of the running was a bit lateral but when the backs and forwards took more direct routes they pressured a good Fareham defence, placing them on the back foot. With Fareham trying to use the wind as best they could, it was inevitable that our defence would be turned. So it was, penalty against us, for holding on. Renewed grit and determination from the restart saw immediate pressure on the Fareham defence. With solid forward work ball out and strong running releasing both Jack Rowland and Tom Townsend on both wings. Gradually Trojans gained territory and remained pressurising the Fareham try line. Repeated infringements saw a strict referee warn the Fareham defence. Shortly afterwards Kourosh Afshar crossed for a well deserved try. The half petered out in a mid field chaos that saw one of the Fareham players sin binned more as a result of the earlier infringements. So ended the half with no more scores.

The second half saw the inclusion of more weight in the pack. From the Trojans, kicked well to pressure the Fareham lines. Determined running from Grant Burr and Chris Street gave both Tom Townsend and Jack Rowland chances with only good tackles preventing them from scoring. But it is the old adage that a kick is only as good as the chasers. A deep penetration kick cross field was re gathered by Fareham inside the 22. Tom Townsend clattered the player to the ground and the first person to get there was Zack Kinnard who powered over to score a dramatic try. From the restart it was Trojans that again dominated possession. With Joe (The Beef) Nolan tirelessly bludgeoning, the other Joe Carne and Max Rogers-Haines dominating the ruck and mauls driving the ball forward. A break down the right side saw Chris Street force over. Trojans in the lead.

The final period of the game saw a renewed effort by Fareham to salvage their day. They managed to threaten Trojans try line. Dogged defence again saw Trojans gain a scrum with just minutes to go. The need to reset the scrum after the Fareham front row went down requiring a replacement prop to be summoned back on. Scrum won, and a charge forward caught Joshua Bowker isolated and possession lost. Fareham ran the ball back pressuring along the line. Determined defence saw repeated penalty decisions given against Trojans. Joshua Bowker being sin binned for encroaching in a ruck. With Fareham supporters call for the referee to award a penalty try, both set of players battled on skilfully. The cruellest twist of fate for Trojans. They overturned the ball and at last gained possession the ball was passed to Kourosh Afshar who's clearance kick was charged down drooping a yard over the try line Kourosh unable to turn quickly enough had to watch as a Fareham player dived on the ball. So ended a thrilling game. Well done to both sets of players for great performances all round.

Pete Surtees (Head Coach) had particular praise for the forwards and the way they conducted themselves against a very well drilled pack. In particular he was impressed with the first half performance of  Luke Barnes who made way for Lewis Vigor.

Tries: Kourosh Afshar, Christopher Street, Zack Kinnaird

27/01/08 Salisbury  (A) Friendly  L 0 - 3

WOW what a game!

For the first 20minutes Trojans were camped in Salisbury’s half. Continuous pressure, was put upon the Salisbury team, and especially from the backs, but no leeway was given. Grant Burr put some good high kicks through, chased well by the other backs. Jack Rowland gave Tom Townsend a superb ball, but Tom was pushed out 1 meter from the try line, a bit more straightening up was needed by the backs. Paul Broadway put some great tackles in, and having another good game at scrum half. Joe Carne continued with some thunderous tackling. The forwards did start to pick and drive on their own, a bit more communication was needed. The front row were simply awesome, but could improve by getting lower, with a 2-3-4 that wouldn’t go a miss.

Zack Kinnaird was absolutely everywhere! making tackle after tackle. Grant Burr continued his spectacular tackle rate, nice and low and hard. Jack Rowland put some good pressure kicks in. Luke Barnes took control at scrum half as Paul Broadway was buried at the bottom of a ruck, and with a superb pass that nearly resulted in a try, but Salisbury’s defending was very good. Tony Hewitt started taking the ball into the rucks with excellent confidence. Max Roger-Haines looped around the backs making an overlap which nearly resulted in a try, but Salisbury’s good defence kept us out. Tom Townsend put some unbelievable kicks in under pressure, which were chased by Zack Kinnaird and Kourosh Afshar.

Now into the second half, there was still no score, it must have been a great game for the neutral spectator. Now our 9 and 10 started talking, we realised when we were in our 22, we cleared the ball to touch. Elliott Culley put some good pressurised chases in. It was now Trojans turn to defend our try line, which every single player did superbly for 15 minutes. Due to injury we had to make two front row replacements, Tony Hewitt who did brilliantly at hooker, and Neil McBride at tight head. Andy King went off with an injured shoulder through some thunderous tackling. Elliott Culley cleared brilliantly, as Kourosh Afshar chased well and Tom Townsend kept the pressure on. In the last 15minutes of the match, once again Trojans kept the pressure on Salisbury, camped in their 22, but couldn’t breach the good defence.

Every single Trojan must, and especially Callum Hall, who played with a badly injured knee deserves enormous praise for the 100% totally committed effort.

It was a game lost, but both teams, gave the game of rugby a fabulous advert.

20/01/08 Alton  (A) Friendly  W 20 - 12

Alton’s pitches were surprisingly heavy under foot, and very difficult to stay on your feet.

It was a mixed starting line up, with those that trained on Friday evening getting to start.

Andy King made an immediate impact, driving forward carrying the ball well.

Nick Cook made some very hard tackles. Not to be outdone, Joe Carne tackled hard as well, and making good ground. Grant Burr, kicked intelligently, putting pressure on Alton, and made some text book tackles throughout the game.

Daniel Thompson showed a good pair of hands, allowing Zack Kinnaird to loop around to score our first try in the corner. Jack Rowland made some good catches in the air and called the mark in our 22. Paul Broadway playing at scrum half did well, and started marshalling the forwards better.

Max Rogers-Haines came on and made an immediate impact, ripping the ball from Alton, and driving the mauls forward. John Baird had a good game on the wing, taking some good ball and scoring two tries. Luke Barnes did well at hooker, hooking every ball that came into the scrum. Christopher Street ran in a well worked backs try.

Callum Hall caught and recycled the ball well in the line outs. Joshua Bowker rallied the forwards and made good ground. Neil Mcbride, Joe Nolan and Patrick Philips had their usually good game. Tom Townsend had some good strong runs, even though he had his sister’s boots on!

Lewis Vigor showed good strength and power in the rucks. Alton’s first try came from a penalty, where some of the Trojans players had their backs to the ball, the second was a better worked backs move. So, if you can win, and not play that well, that can’t be a bad thing.  Well done lads.

Tries: John Baird x 2, Zack Kinnaird, Christopher Street.

13/01/08 New Milton  (A) League  W 47 - 5

A resolute Trojans team arrived at New Milton determined to make amends for the performance last campaign. A good warm up, with all showing a commitment to the team and the task in hand, boded well for a good result. Changes had to be made as the pack was left without a specialist hooker, so again Patrick Philips stepped up to the plate. Paul was ever volunteered/coerced/chosen (delete where applicable) to be the days’ scrum half. So, with on the job training, Paul joined the forwards for one of the quickest learning curves of the season! Well done

Thankfully, Josh eventually joined the fixture, which was more than can be said for the missing referee! The managers and head coaches eventually sorted that out and the game kicked off late. A blustery day on a heavy pitch was always going to be a test for both teams. The team that hit their stride soonest was always going to have the advantage. Immediately from the kick off, New Milton knocked on, giving the Trojans pack a chance to assert some domination over the opposing pack. Ball won followed with a period of determined rucking, forcing New Milton to concede a line out 7 metres out. A shortened line out saw Zack Kinnaird join the front of the line out and over in the corner.

The restart saw some early pressure from New Milton, partly due to Trojans ill discipline and not following the game plan of clearing inside the 22. Eventually, a long kick out was chased well and the resulting ball for Jack Rowland to cross in the corner. The restart saw a greater confidence in Trojans with Elliot Culley, Grant Burr and Christopher Street taking on the New Milton backs, this coupled with Max Roger-Haines, Andy King, Joe Carne and Patrick Philips determined forward work. With both Zack Kinnaird and Joshua Bowker making deep penetrating runs and hitting the line well. The first half ended with another good try from Jack Rowland.

The second half saw Trojans quickly out of the blocks to score on the wing with Tom Townsend. The pattern of tries in the half as New Milton's ideas and cohesion disappeared, was a quick forward engage then rapid movement out to the wing and then over. Tom Townsend scored once more, with Matthew Lawton and John Baird scoring one each. Kourosh Afshar managed to cross the line twice. His first a determined charge from fifteen yards out was tackled, but not held, he got up and dived over the line. His second try gave Paul Broadway his only simple conversion chance of the day. A difficult day for place kicking.

Tries: Jack Rowland x 2, Tom Townsend x 2, Kourosh Afshar x 2, Zack Kinnaird, John Baird, Matthew Lawton.

Cons: Paul Broadway.

Overall an excellent performance, in very difficult conditions, determination to succeed, a continued team ethos and people working for each other. Well done, an enjoyable spectacle.

06/01/08 Chichester  (A) Friendly  W 21 - 0

With a later than usual kick off, we were at Chichester and ready to go on time.

Last season Trojans played a mixed Chichester team with some older players in their side. A good warm up session to reinforce the plays practiced at Friday night training, and the team was ready. The play was mainly in mid field with Trojans giving no ground.

The defence by Trojans was on form today, and the tackles by both forwards and backs excellent. Attack was the play for the day, and it was certainly carried out.

The rolling mauls and the rucking was by far the best so far this season, with the forwards making a fine platform for the backs to work from. The first try by Tom Townsend was well worked and made Chichester realise that they were in a game. A good conversion by Paul Broadway lifted the team. Midfield battles were carried out with some strong defence and some held up balls on the try line kept the score at half time to 0-7

The second half carried on in the same vain with Trojans giving no ground and working hard to defend and attack. Two tries by Joshua Bowker and Christopher Street with conversions by Paul Broadway made the game 0-21 which made the match sound easy but this was far from it. Chichester are a very good top of the table team and Trojans worked hard to show that they can be a top table team and play to a very high standard.

Tries: Tom Townsend, Joshua Bowker, Christopher Street.

Cons: Paul Broadway x 3

Well done everyone!

16/12/07  Petersfield  (A) League W 15 - 8

The match started very evenly with 100% commitment from both sides. Trojans forwards dominated the Petersfield pack, and kept pounding the Petersfield try line, but could not get over. Eventually, the Trojans pack committed more Petersfield players causing an overlap on the wing. The backs passed the ball well, allowing Tom Townsend to run in our first try. Trojans started causing overlaps, but a few wrong decisions in the backs did not allow us to score more tries. However, eventually the backs got their act together, allowing Christ Street to power his way over the line for the second try.

Trojans had started dominating the game. Grant Burr side stepped two defenders, scoring our third try. Unusually, no conversions or penalties were kicked, but later, a duff ball being supplied was thought to be the cause. Patrick Philips, Joe Carne and Max Rogers- Haines were superb in the loose. Zack Kinnaird tackled his heart out. Joshua Bowker made good ground, powering his way through the defence. Lewis Vigor came on as flanker and caused immediate havoc. Keeping good possession the pack worked well together, eventually the backs worked some good moves. A good win for Trojans.

Tries: Tom Townsend, Christopher Street, Grant Burr.

02/12/07  Havant  (H) League  L 0 - 11

On a slightly wet and windy day the decision to play the league game was agreed with the ref and Havant.

The game plan was to be a heavy forward pack against a mobile Havant pack.

At kick off the wind was behind Trojans giving the advantage to attack, a good kick forward, some return play, then forward again to the first line out. The line out was a bit of a lottery with the wind taking the ball and the pattern was set for a number of NOT STRAIGHT line outs. The first half was played mainly in the Havant corner, but with the rain increasing and the wind high, Trojans could not make pressure pay. A penalty kick by Havant was missed almost on half time.

Second half and advantage Havant.

With the backs starting to feel the wind, cold hands caused a few errors, when the ball came out to them.

The forwards did have some good mauling work but the final ball was lost. Havant moved forward and were easily rewarded with a silly penalty which was kicked for 3 points. So the game continued in the same vein, with too many penalties given too cheaply. A good defence with the ball held up on the line saved a try, but we were soon giving away another penalty for 3 points. A late run through, with wet and cold defenders and a try was scored by Havant.

All in all a bad day at the office.

25/11/07  Romsey  (A) Friendly  W 93 - 5

Trojans were almost at full strength with this fixture and were looking forward to the outing with mild confidence. Jack Rowland kicked off with his trademark high and deep ball, which immediately resulted in a Trojans lineout. A clean ball from Christian Astridge was confidently gathered by Tony Hewitt, who set up a solid ruck, which gave Trojans a platform for the backs to be released. After a bit of back and forth from both sides, Matthew Stenning went forward but was held up on the Romsey try line. The resulting scrum produced a pick up from Patrick Philips who went over to get the first try, which was not converted.

Trojans picked up the ball from the Romsey kick off and immediately gain a line out on Romsey’s 22 yard and from this Jack Rowland made a weaving run to score a try, again unconverted. In an almost identical play from the Romsey kick off Jack again got the ball and goes over for his second try, which he converts.

After the next Romsey kick off, Lewis Vigor, combined with Joe Carne, who made a classic back row advance and obtained a Trojan scrum from which Elliott Culley took the ball forward, only to be held up on the try line but managed to release the ball for Joe Nolan who got try number four. No conversion.

Trojans, now confident continued their onslaught of the weakened Romsey pack and from a long lineout throw from Christian, Zack Kinnaird picked up the ball from the back of the lineout and in the resulting advance Matthew Stenning was on hand to juggle an awkward ball to go over for another converted try. Just before half time Paul Broadway collected the ball and scored a try, yet again, which he confidently converted.

It was quite clear that Trojans were taking the game to Romsey in no uncertain terms and it was good to see the forwards creating clean ball for Matthew Stenning to release the backs on a regular basis throughout the second half, and in fact even the numerous substitution did not divert Trojans control of the game, as in the second half the boys took the final score to 93 for Trojans against 5 for Romsey.

Paul Broadway and Jack Rowland contributed enormously by racking the score up with conversions to the abundant try scoring. A special mention for Christopher Street (ex Romsey Wasps) player who, though did not score, made a major contribution in pressurising the Romsey full back and setting up quite a few of the tries scored by Trojans.

Tries: Joshua Bowker x 3, Joe Nolan x 2, Jack Rowland x 2, Matt Stenning, Paul Broadway, “Big”John Baird, Kourosh Afshar, Callum Hall, Luke Barnes, Tom Townsend.

Conversions: Paul Broadway x 6 Jack Rowland x 3.

All in all a “good day at the office” which was most welcome in setting the platform for next weekends league game against Havant .

Well done boys on a magnificent clinical performance.

11/11/07  Portsmouth  (H) Friendly  W 31 - 5

After the result last week, rucking, mauling and scrummage were on the agenda for warm up.

With a shortage of players, the backs picked themselves, Kourosh Afshar at fly, Grant Burr and Tom Townsend at centres, Matthew Lawton, Daniel Thompson wings and Jack Rowland full back. The forwards had the luxury of three subs.

After the two minutes silence for Remembrance Day, the game got underway with Trojans being pushed into their 22 for a line out. Some stout defence by the backs and a good clearance from Matthew Stenning kept out Portsmouth. Some top class out of hand kicking by Jack Rowland, a fumble by Portsmouth and a scrum to Trojans. A sensible Joshua Bowker in the scrum and he was over for a try. A silly penalty by Portsmouth and quick work by Matthew Stenning, try number two. With good pressure by Trojans in the first half it ended 12-0

Mr Utility, this week as flanker, Neil McBride, led the way again from the kick off with a massive tackle to show how to do things. Another good out of hand kick by Jack Rowland led to a line out, from which Joshua scored his second try. Big Joe Nolan came off, as planned, to allow Nick (TheTackle) Cook on at prop, but we were down to 14 men. Tony Hewitt took a nasty knock to the head after a lot of hard work, and had to be replaced by Christian Astridge. On came Callum Hall for Joe Carne and the forwards were again pressurizing the Portsmouth defence.

With the good work by the forwards being led by Andy King, Patrick Phillips and a sniping Lewis Vigor we got a penalty near the line. Fast hands by Matthew Stenning, Grant Burr and Matthew Lawton was over for his try.

Some strong defence and good return kicks and again Trojans were back in the Portsmouth 22.

Pressure by the whole pack and, supported by the backs, another try was had, this time by Tom Townsend (Friday nights training paid off)

A slight miss-communication after a line out and scrum at our end, Portsmouth scored, which in all fairness they deserved.

The score may make it look like an easy day at the office, but it was far from it.

Portsmouth are a strong well drilled team, who on another day could have scored more points, and they did not give anything away. Trojans had to work hard for territory and to defend their own. Every player stuck to the game plan and played for the team.

Strong tackles, cover defence, percentage rugby, communication and support were all in evidence. Each man had a job to do and did it!

After recent results this has to be the turning point, because today’s team showed that this is how to play, and that they can play.

Tries: Joshua Bowker x 2, Matthew Stenning, Matthew Lawton, Tom Townsend.

Conversions: Jack Rowland x 3

Well done everyone!! (It cheered Richard up after all his hard work in the summer and EVERY FRIDAY NIGHT)

04/11/07  Jersey  (H) League  L 12 - 36

After two weeks on the road, it was back to good old HQ. The sun was shining! and an afternoon kick off, was to give the lads a new perspective on preparing for a game, i.e. a lay in!

Trojans side has been troubled with injuries in recent weeks, so a revamped pack was required to adapt and adjust quickly. Neil McBride, Luke Barnes and Patrick Philips in the front row, with Callum Hall and Joe Carne in the second, helped pressure the Jersey pack in the opening phase from the kick off. Elliott Culley’s gathering of the ball, and placing a good infield kick, chased down by Christopher Street on the wing caused panic in the Jersey ranks, which gave a scrum in a good attacking position. Shades of Basingstoke last year though, as Trojans pressure was relieved by a careless penalty. The resulting penalty kick deep down field, forced a handling error, the resulting scrum saw Jersey break. A poor tackling display against an elusive runner saw Jersey get the first try, and conversion.

From the restart, another penalty resulted from holding on. Jersey chose to kick for goal, which they missed. From the restart Trojans pressure forced Jersey to kick for touch. A good catch and drive from the line out saw Zack Kinnaird break, brought down just short of Jersey’s 22. Trojans gained a penalty, which the referee moved forward due to comments by the Jersey players. Line out won, ball cross field to allow the backs to run, but held up short of the posts. Some poor handling, and passing out of the tackles caused possession to be lost. Poor discipline this time though saw a reversing of the line out decision to be lost. The resulting line out saw Jersey spread the ball, with the through ball gathered by Elliott on or around the try line. The referee decided to give an attacking scrum, which Jersey won, spreading the ball wide and scoring in the corner, no conversion this time.

Restart saw a Trojans surge forward to pressure Jersey, who kicked for the safety of touch. The ball well won by Joshua Bowker at the front of the line. A good cross ball kick followed up by Christopher Street’s hard chasing, Jersey ran the ball out. A good line out saw Zack Kinnaird make good yardage. Support drove over, but during the movement phase a knock on. Resulting scrum saw Trojans take one against the head, resulting break, forced Jersey to infringe. With only seconds of the half to play Trojans elected to kick for goal, Paul Broadway wishing he had the same tail wind, as he had at Ringwood, but regrettably was unable to convert. A first half of missed opportunities forcing the pressure to be relaxed.

With plenty still to be played for, saw Trojans force forward, but relieved the pressure by giving away two quick penalties. The early exchanges saw a number of scrums in quick possession, then aerial ping pong till Jersey made touch. The line out won, cross field attack resulting in a penalty, another ten yards gained from resulting line out as Trojans started to pressure the Jersey line again. The ball though spilled into Jersey’s hands, with a missed tackle then a mid field kick, gathered by Elliott. Isolated, he kicked and chased to the centre, Zack Kinnaird managed to smother the loose ball. Jersey though gained the penalty, kicked in to our half, won the line out and spun wide. Missed tackles saw Jersey score under the posts, and gain a converted try.

Trojans battled back, and again moved to challenge the Jersey try line. They crossed the line, but were held up, resulting scrum saw a break for the corner, but poor passing prevented Trojans going over. Jersey gained a penalty from the next phase of play, and Jersey kicked for touch, but found Jack Rowland prowling on the wing. Jack ran back and kicked a high Gary Owen, the bounce favoured him as he gathered the ball and went over for a great individual try. At last well deserved points.

From the restart Joshua Bowker broke, supported by Elliott. But the penalty count was going against Trojans, allowing Jersey to clear their lines. From the line out, another penalty was conceded which Jersey ran, broke through tackles and scored in the corner, but not converted. The restart saw Jersey break back at us, gaining a line out, which they won, and crossed our line for a converted try. Callum Hall managed to drive forward some fifteen metres, causing Jersey to infringe. A penalty for us, with the ball breaking to Joshua Bowker, who powered under the posts, which Paul Broadway converted. The restart saw a solid period of Trojan mauling. Matthew Stenning put up a box kick but the bounce favoured Jersey. They ran back strong and were only stopped by a determined tackle by Tom Townsend, which sent the ball forward and the Jersey player backwards. Jersey pressured our scrum and the resulting penalty saw Jersey chip forward, re- gather and drive forwards for another try, missed conversion. Restart saw Trojans pressurising Jersey, but no time was left to change the score.

Lessons lads, basics! Tackling, passing and communication. But above all do not relieve pressure by giving away careless penalties. Rule books available on request, just see the coaches. Positives: Some solid running by Kourosh Afshar, Grant Burr and Christopher Street when they had the ball. Line out’s worked well with both long and short options available, and some good catch and drive. When we have the opposition in trouble we need to keep the pressure on.

Tries: Jack Rowland, Joshua Bowker   Conversion: Paul Broadway

Good meal afterwards, with plenty of social interaction. Thank you to all who supported throughout the day.

21/10/07  Lytchett Minster (A) Friendly  L 5 - 56

Sunday was away to Lytchett Minster, who always have a warm welcome for us.

With only 18 players available, and three half hour games arranged, the team had their work cut out. The starting line up was looking good with our new prop Andy King in place. Off we went into the oppositions half, after a good decision made by stand in captain, Grant Burr, to kick away from the sun. Almost immediately a massive problem, when Patrick Philps went down with a foot injury which kept him out for the whole game. One of our leaders down.

Mr Utility, Neil McBride, again called upon, and again showing his willingness, in as prop for Patrick Philips, and doing his usual good job. Joe Carne to second row for Neil, with Lewis Vigor. Silly mistakes, with hand in places the referee did not like, so penalties given away to easily, and soon six points against us. Some nice play with the forwards, Joshua Bowker and backs, Elliott Culley and John Baird, combining well almost led to points, but not quite. Luke Barnes was next off, with George Rope in as hooker, but not for long. Andy King went off with an injured elbow, so back on Luke Barnes. A try soon after made the first session 11-0.

A long look at the walking wounded, soon showed the second session was going to be tough. Scrum half Christian Astridge was next down with a hamstring, so Joshua Bowker moved to scrum half, Callum Hall to No8. With no substitutes, and many of the players out of position, encouragement from the sidelines was needed, and given by all the parents. Some good defensive work by the lads kept Lytchett at bay, especially the try saved by Matthew Lawton in the corner, and the hold up by John Baird. Tiredness and more niggling injuries started to show, tries were made, with Lytchett 26.0 this session.

With the team still looking to play, the third session got underway with Tony Hewitt at scrum half, and Joshua at flanker. Some good work by the lads all over the pitch had them tackling well and some nice interplay, but an injury to Joshua and he was off. After two tries, most teams would have given up, but not this team. A good defence with Tom Woolgar in as full back and some nice running forward. With a seven man scrum, we did well to pull a good try back by Kourosh Afshar running in. With Callum Hall the next off, Lytchett lent us two players, but one more try and this session was 19-5

A hard day, but as the referee said at the end “ If more teams kept going the way Trojans did with the amount of injuries, and the score against them, there would be a lot better rugby being played.”

Try: Kourosh Afshar

Well done everyone, and thank you to all the parents who travelled to Dorset supporting the team.

07/10/07  US Portsmouth  (A) League  L 10 - 12

The game started with Trojans on an all out attack, and throughout the game Trojans made the better ground and kept good possession. The forwards made a good platform for Christopher Street to clear our 22, the only time US Portsmouth had been there. Max Rogers-Haines, the player of the day, looked unstoppable as he ripped the ball from most opposition mauls, and he was always there in support. Patrick Philips had a blinder, talking to the pack at the right times. Luke Barnes line throwing was exceptional, but he will need to work on his discipline more.

Tom Townsend put in some crunching tackles, as did Zack Kinnaird along with Max Rogers-Haines, who also supported each other well, and made lots of ground. As the pressure continued we closed US Portsmouth in their 22, forcing a line out. Joe Nolan leapt and caught the ball, just like a coiled spring, and beefed his way over their try line to score. Joshua Bowker made lots of ground in the right direction, running straight and using his strength to make good yards. Lewis Vigor helped to secure ruck ball and used text book driving positions in both the rucks and mauls. However, on the 25 mins the forwards had a lapse in concentration and let US Portsmouth score a try. US Portsmouth then had a penalty and Trojans only just marked the posts. The ball hit the posts and we had only just thought about defending them. Neil McBride caught the ball, setting a platform for a good clearance by Matthew Stenning. We eventually woke up and played some excellent rugby and defended well.

Jack Rowland cleared from our 22 in the 5 metre area with the ball landing just outside US Portsmouth’s try line in the 5 metre area. Christopher Street, pressurising the full back, caused him to miss kick and so we camped down the US Portsmouth end. Zack Kinnaird made a superb run, linking well with John Baird, who ran in Trojans second try.

Trojans will have to work on giving away fewer penalties. When selected to play, all players should give the right body language and be up for giving 100 percent. But the squad did very well; the game could have gone either way. Trojans were sometimes greedy near the try line, even when we worked a few overlaps. This was a huge improvement from last year against US Portsmouth, so well done squad.

Tries: Joe Nolan. John Baird .

30/09/07  Tottonians  (A) Friendly  W 26 - 17

The match started off fiercely contested, until Tottonians broke through the Trojans defence to score the 1st try, which they converted. Trojans made plenty of overlaps, but did not use them until the forwards eventually made a platform for the backs to run in a well worked try scored by Matthew Lawton, with Paul Broadway converting from the touch line. Joe Nolan went off with a shoulder injury, as did Max Rogers-Haines with an injury to his leg, both had played excellent game time. Discipline had started to weaken, with Trojans being penalised mostly for back chat.

Tom Townsend powered his way over for his first try. Tony Hewitt tackled superbly, defending Trojans line. Nick Cook made some thunderous tackles on the big Tottonians forwards. John Baird could not get enough of the ball, and eventually ran in a well deserved try. Paul Broadway scored the conversion. Neil McBride, our utility player had a superb all round game, completing all the basics well. Tom Townsend ran in another try and Paul Broadway converted again in front of the posts. The backs kept good shape, although at times the centre position looked suspect, but Tom Townsend did well helping the forwards out at times. Elliott Culley chipped over the defence well, and making good ground.

Tries: Matthew Lawton x 1, Tom Townsend x 2,  John Baird x 1.

 Conversions: Paul Broadway x 3

Well done everyone.

23/09/07  Gosport & Fareham  (H) Friendly  W 51 - 3

The new season got underway with a friendly against Gosport and Fareham.

The squad came out looking impressive in our new training tops and showed great respect for the one minute silence on behalf of Gosport and Fareham’s sad loss.

From the kick off Trojans were into the game and quickly into the opposite 22 with a good move made by Neil Mc Bride, who was unlucky not to score. The ball was worked by the forwards and out to the backs with Tom Townsend scoring a try and a conversion by Paul Broadway. The kick off was returned well by Trojans and a run by Joshua Bowker almost came to another try. The rucking and mauling by the forwards was being well led by Pat Phillips and again the link to the backs led to Tom Townsend’s second try.

The second 15 minutes was started in a similar way to the first. The team was soon into the opposite 22 and gained a 5 yard scrum. Elliott Culley made a run through the G&F defence and with a good hand off and tackles, and with not being held by the defence; he was in for his first try. With a penalty against us, Elliott Culley again made one of his long runs, with Tom Woolgar in good support, was able to off load to him. A strong hand off from Tom Woolgar, and with a pass back to Elliott, he was in again for his second try.

Third 15 minutes, and changes made both, positionally and players.

Kourosh in as scrum half, Jack Rowland as fly, Chris Street at centre, John Baird and Matt Lawton on the wings, the backs were set. The forwards change was for Tony Hewitt to come on as flanker. The team carried on as if there were no changes, and were soon able to work Chris Street in for his first (one of many we hope!) Trojan try. Not to be out done, Joshua was soon back on the score sheet after some good passing and play from Grant Burr with the backs putting strong pressure on G&F. With some good all round play, the ball was out to the backs and into Chris Street’s hands again for a weaving run through the G&F defence for his second try.

Fourth 15 minutes and the summer training was showing in the team. Trojans were able to dominate the game and with everyone wanting to play, pressure was strong on and off the pitch, with players wanting to return to the field. Some silky kicking by Jack Rowland, pressure by the forwards, good handling by the backs led to another try by Josh and converted by Matthew Stenning.

Tries:  Tom Townsend x 2, Elliott Culley x 2, Chris Street x 2, Joshua Bowker x 2, Matthew Stenning x 1

 Conversions:  Paul Broadway x 2, Matthew Stenning x 1

Each and every player in the squad showed today how the team can play, and the commitment was outstanding. From the short of numbers forwards, to the hard working backs, the efforts were well rewarded with the result and deservedly so. Well done everyone.
