Report from the IOW tournament held at Vectis on the 25th of April 2010.

A very BIG well done to all the Lions squad who left the IOW festival crowned as champions.

Having been drawing in a Group with the following teams, we all knew that the team would have to bring their A game with them and they didn’t disappoint.

Chichester (West Sussex Champions) – Won 5 -2

Heathfield A (East Sussex Runners Up) – Won 3 - 0

Dorking – Won 6 -0

Beccehamians (Kent Runners Up) – Won 2-1

Having qualified for the Cup Competition, the Lions would face our friends from Romsey Wasps in the quarter final which they won 5 – 1.

Vectis, the host club would  be the next team the Lions would meet in the Semi-final which they won very convincingly 7-0.

In the Final the Lions would meet Bracknell A, a team who were the Berkshire County Champions and currently unbeaten for the season having narrowly got through to the final courtesy of a lucky ‘toss of the coin’ after drawing 4-4 with North Dorset in the other semi-final.

After an excellent all round performance I am pleased to report that the Trojans ‘Lions’ won the match 4-1 and were crowned IOW champions.

Well done to Tom S, Theo, Thomas, Ollie S, Ollie B, Linton, Ben, Ewan, Lucas, Harry and Owen for an excellent team performance.

From looking at the overall statistics of Played 7, Won 7, Scored 32 Tries and Conceded 5 you can see that the team was really up for the event and with 9 of the 11 squad players scoring at least 1 try during the festival, our attacking play was really good.

For those of you who watched the games and in the opinion of many of the coaches from other teams, what really made the difference was our defensive play and hunger to tag opposition players. I lost count of the number of times the team generated ‘turn over’ ball on the 7th tag!...

A special mention to the Tigers squad who played with a lot of heart and highlighted the depth of squad we now have at Trojans and also to Toby Hale, Jack Davey and William Reynolds who helped out our U/7’s.

14/03/10 - U/8s win the County Championship at Winchester

Trojans arrived at Winchester RFC looking to defend the County Champions title they won at U/7s level last season knowing they would have to bring their ‘A’ game with them.

They were drawn against Vectis, Tottonians and Portsmouth for the group stages and played some good attacking Rugby. The biggest difference between the teams was the excellent defensive play which led to many ‘turn overs’ of the ball after 7 tags. Every squad member played active parts ensuring Trojans qualified for the next round as group winners but more importantly, scoring 23 tries and only conceding 3. This was very important as you will see later in this report.

Summary of the Group games was as follows

Game 1   Trojans 7 - Vectis 2.        Tries scored by Ewan Christopher(2), Ollie Bridges(2), Ben Randell, Harry Ball

                                                 and Ollie Salkeld

Game 2   Trojans 9 - Tottonians 1   Tries scored by Tom South (2), Ollie Chaffey, Linton Roberts, Ollie Salkeld (2),

Lucas Datson, Josh Lambrou, Thomas Stimson

Game 3   Trojans 7 - Portsmouth 0.  Tries scored by Ollie Salkeld, Tom South(2), Ollie Bridges, Thomas Stimson,

                                                 Lucas Datson(2)

Moving on to the quarterfinals, Trojans were drawn to play Farnborough, a club that they had never played before. The match was played on a very small and narrow pitch which really suited the opposition and did not give the Trojans team the opportunity to play the fast attacking game they had been playing in the group stages.

With the score being 2-2 at full time, the ‘count-back’ had to be used as per the tournament rules and with a massive +20 points difference, it was Trojans who qualified for the semi-final.

Quarter Finals  Trojans 2 - Farnborough 2.  Tries scored were Ollie Bridges and Ollie Salkeld.

The next match would see Trojans play Petersfield, a team that was playing very well on the day, again on the small pitch.

A couple of the players were now carrying injuries and it was a great squad effort by the boys securing a hard fought victory against a well drilled and physical Petersfield team with some excellent pressure defense which led to 5 ball ‘turn overs’ for 7 tags at crucial stages of the game.

Semi-Final       Trojans 4, Peterfield 3.         Tries scored by Ben Randell, Ewan Christopher and Tom South (2)

On to the finals, Trojans would play a very confident New Milton team who had already beaten them in our own club tournament final held in October and were looking for revenge after Trojans had beaten them in last year’s semi-final. The players know that the New Milton team is built around 2 or 3 key players and as long as these were kept under control, there was no reason that Trojans couldn’t win the game.

In a very tense first half, the teams changed ends with the score at 1-1.

Once again, after generating ‘turn over’ ball Trojans finally got their noses in front, securing the win with an excellent ‘team’ try  with the last play of the game.

Final              Trojans 3, New Milton 1          Tries scored by Ben Randell, Ewan Christopher and Harry Ball

What more can be said other that a massive WELL DONE to all the Trojans Under 8’s who have left Winchester RFU today as Hampshire Champions!......

Report from the recent tournament held at New Milton RFC on the 4th of October 2009.

Travelling to New Milton full of enthusiasm and looking forward to another year of great rugby were the Hampshire county Champions U7 from 2008, now representing Trojans at U8 level. The League structure found Trojans in the strongest group against familiar opponents Salisbury, New Milton, Wimborne and Bournemouth.

After a slow start the Trojans running rugby started to show against a resolute Salisbury side with excellent support play producing a number of well run tries. The defence worked well and Trojans ran out 4-1 winners. A good start but harder games to come. Next up were Wimborne, a very good all-round team, but more excellent defence kept Trojans in the game and with superb passing movements and team work producing tries for Ben Randell and Tom South. The final score 3-3

New Milton, a well organised side, produced the hardest match in the league and an open game with both sides attacking at every opportunity gave the watching crowd a great deal of enjoyment. Unfortunately  despite some stout defending and great effort New Milton prevailed 6-3. Trojans first loss.

To progress to the knock out stages Trojans had to beat Bournemouth in the final game. Excellent running rugby from the first to the last minute produced a range of memorable tries and strong defensive kept Bournemouth at bay to allow Trojans to run out 6-4 winners.

The semi final in the Cup competition was against the winners of the other group, Ellingham & Ringwood. Trojans got off to a flying start, putting E & R under pressure at all times. Excellent passing and support allowed Owen Tucker his first for Trojans try and spurred the team on to a 6-2 victory.

The final was to be against New Milton who had already beaten Trojans in the Group stages. Trojans started well in attack but defensive slips allowed New Milton to run in some soft tries. Trojans kept at it and gave everything, something we have come to expect off this group off players. Unfortunately the defensive slips continued and late tries were not enough to stop a rampant New Milton side who ran out worthy winners 7-4.

Well done to all the boys with a special mention to Owen Tucker who only joined Trojans 4 weeks ago but has already shown signs of becoming another excellent addition to the Trojans U8's.
