26/10/08 Henley (Away) League W 29 - 0
The ladies rugby 1st XV achieved their first away win of the season to newly demoted Henley on the sunny Sunday Thames. (It rained)
An excellent team performance of good defence and hard graft to grind out a 29-0 bonus point win, (for those of you who don’t understand the bonus points system if you score 5 tries you get more points). A strong performance by the pack allowed Trojans to dominate possession with frequent incursions into the opposition 22 and allowed no chance for Henley to use the ball for long periods of time.
Henley attacked us hard in the first 20 minutes but we took the lead through a breakaway try from Sally Greenway converted by Sara Conlon. Then as Trojans started to gain the upper hand Sheree Crabb capitalised on a Henley mistake to score another.
By now Trojans were well on top and further tries came from Lisa Suffling, Daria Hinz and Jenna Ryrie. For the 2nd match in a row the whole 21 player squad played their own part in a good victory. Despite numerous strong performances from the three quarters, including those of Clare Hunter, Claire Abbott, Sara Conlon, Sheree Crabb and Sally Greenway, Jo Langmead was elected back’s player of the match, whilst Sarah Hodges, who showed good leadership skills as pack leader, fought off challenges from Daria Hinz, Ashley Rowlands and Jenna Ryrie for the award of forward of the match.
Those of you with an interest in these things will be keen to know that the Forwards outscored the backs 3-2 on tries!
The themed singing on the coach on the way back was to the new sound of music hymn book (Pumba) and finished off with our traditional red hymn book of rugby songs.
21/09/08 Hove (Home) League W 27 - 5
A bonus point winning start to the season against newly promoted Hove (from championship 2SE) was achieved on Sunday 21st September 2008.
In a tense early start to the game the Trojans pack showed their dominance in the set piece and tight driving game and soon established good territorial and possession dominance. Following a well drilled penalty move the ball was moved out wide which lead to a try for Stacey White on the wing. Following the first score Trojans continued to have large amount of possession and territorial advantage but good defensive work by Hove lead to no scores in this period. Close to half time a well worked switch move in the opponents twenty two lead to a try for centre Kelly Rush close to the post and this completed the score in the first half to 10-0.
The second half continued with Trojans dominating set piece, possession and territory but again good defence by Hove kept the score at 10-0. Fifteen minutes into the second half the game went into uncontested scrums following injury to the second Hove front row forward and as there were no further trained props available. At around sixty minutes into the game Stacey White scored her second try of the game with an individual and powerful run down the wing following fielding a kick out of defence by Hove. On her run from the ten metre line she broke three tackles to score. Hove were now showing signs of fatigue and Trojans full back Sally Greenway counter-attacked from deep for another well run individual try converted by Sara Conlon. Late on in the game Winger Clair Hunter finished off a good running backs move with a try in the corner to complete the scoring.
Trojans are next playing Saracens away on Sunday 5th October 2008 and at home against Plymouth Albion on Sunday 12th October 2008 KO 2.30pm.
