1st v Basingstoke home 16th March 2018
A good win under lights
Trojans had a convincing win against bottom place Basingstoke under lights on Friday, although the score doesn’t reflect the effort put in by Basingstoke at times but they were primarily beaten by the total dominance of the Trojans forwards. Veteran prop Marcus Coffin was made man of the match for a great individual try even though fly-half Toogi Long scored 28 points, three tries, five conversions and a penalty.
Trojans kicked off and contained Basingstoke to their own half and from a line-out on five minutes the ball was chipped over the Basingstoke defence for centre Ben Fontaine to gather and cross the line with a Toogi Long conversion. Trojans kept up the pressure and, after a strong run by the Basingstoke full back taking the ball into the Trojans 22 but making no more of it, Trojans were back in the Basingstoke 22 with a successful penalty kicked by Long on the quarter hour. Trojans were well on top in the scrums and mauls and had a couple of scoring chances but, after 25 minutes Trojans had to defend in their own half and some loose passing allowed Basingstoke to intercept and run down unopposed to score a converted try. Soon after, Trojans were back on the attack and from a line-out on the 22 a great driving maul pushed right to the line with the ball being slipped out for Fontaine to score his second try, converted by Long. Trojans were keeping up the pressure but, just before half time, some good running from the Basingstoke backs resulted in a score in the quarter. So, although Trojans were dominating throughout the half they were only 17 – 12 ahead at the break.
Right at the start of the second half, a Basingstoke defensive kick was charged down and Long was on hand to gather, run to the line and convert his own try. Although Basingstoke put in some good play in was generally Trojans with the territorial advantage and when the ball popped out the back of a Basingstoke ruck prop Marcus Coffin was on hand with an excellent pick-up to run the 10 metres to the line for an easy Long conversion. On 25 minutes Long was again on the score sheet with his own chip over the defence and run round to gather and put another 7 points to his name. This was followed up with five minutes to go when Long picked up the ball at the back of ruck close to the Basingstoke line and dive over for his hat-trick and close the convincing win.
