Andover at Home
A good bonus point win
Trojans gained their first league match of the season with a bonus point win over Andover at Stoneham Lane in a match which was close for most of the game.
Trojans attacked from the start and, within five minutes, winger Elliott Culley followed up a quick ball from a maul to crash over in the corner with Chris Boyd converting. Andover then put in some good attacking moves but a mistake just inside their own half saw a loose ball hacked on and Culley gathering to run half the length of the pitch, finally slipping the ball to centre Pat Gibbs to score under the posts to give Boyd an easy conversion. Andover then had a long period in the ascendancy and, on twenty minutes, had a five metre scrum which they pushed over the line to touch down with the try converted. From the kick-off, Andover rushed the ball and streaked down the line to score in the corner to put themselves just two points behind. Andover kept up the attacks but, on the half hour, mistakes let them down and allowed Trojans to counter-attack with a backs move ending with a second try for Culley and another Boyd conversion.
Andover started the second half camped at the Trojans end and on five minutes a number of rolling mauls ended with a try and a long range conversion to narrow the gap to two points again. From the kick-off winger Charlie Pooley gained the ball and sped down the wing but was high tackled on the twenty two which resulted in a yellow card for the Andover player. The ensuing play saw the ball passed across field for Gibbs to put the finishing touch. Play then went from end to end with a penalty by Boyd being the only score in the next twenty minutes but it did increase the Trojans lead to ten points. From the kick-off Trojans put a strong attack together ending with a long cross kick being gathered by winger Matt Scott who dashed to the corner with an excellent conversion by Boyd. The seventeen point lead seemed to put Trojans well out of sight but Andover had other ideas and with just five minutes to go, scored a push-over converted try and, right on full time, kicked a penalty to gain a second bonus point.
